About the Congress

The Second Resilient Cities Asia-Pacific 2016 Congress at the Equatorial Hotel on 2-4 March 2016 at Melaka, Malaysia is hosted by Melaka State Government and IMTGT-CIMT and will be organised by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability. It is being clubbed with the International Convention on Melaka Twin Cities. The Prime Minister of Malaysia is expected to launch the event, along with the Chief Minister of Melaka and President of ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability.

ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability is the world’s leading network of over 1,000 cities, towns and metropolises committed to building a sustainable future. By helping our Members to make their cities and regions sustainable, low-carbon, resilient, ecomobile, bio diverse, resource efficient and productive, healthy and happy, with a green economy and smart infrastructure, we impact over 20% of the world’s urban population.

The congress builds on the success of the ‘Resilient Cities - The Annual Global Forum on Urban Resilience and Adaptation’ series, organised by ICLEI which attracts hundreds of participants to Bonn, Germany, every year since 2010. This event in Bonn shows how pressing the issue of climate adaptation and resilience is perceived among local governments worldwide. In response to heightened demand from the Asia Pacific Region, ICLEI has now decided to expand the congress series to include Resilient Cities Asia-Pacific, bringing the event and the focus to the Asia-Pacific region, catering to the situation, challenges and opportunities of local governments specifically in this region.

The Second Resilient Cities Asia-Pacific 2016 Congress intends to come up with a Melaka Declaration which will be tabled at the HABITAT III Conference. The main target of the event would be local governments in the Asia Pacific region. We are expecting more than 300 representatives of local governments including at least 200 mayors from different cities in the region. Besides, representatives of international organisations such as the UNEP, UNISDR, UN-HABITAT, UNESCAP and ADB will join the event. Bilateral and multilateral funding agencies such as ADB, World Bank, GIZ, Rockefeller Foundation, OECD, USAID and others would join the event.

The event will consist of a number of plenary and parallel sessions on urban resilience and development, while at the same time provide an opportunity to selected organisations to exhibit their products and services in a special Exhibition Hall. The Exhibition will be inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Melaka. At least 500 people are expected to visit the exhibition booths every day during the event.
