Travelling to Melaka

By air

There is a small airport in Melaka, but is currently not serviced by any commercial airlines. To get in by air, fly to Kuala Lumpur international airport and take an express bus or taxi from there. It hardly takes 1.5 hour to reach Melaka by road.

By Train

Melaka is not served by any railway lines. The nearest train station is about 30 km away. To get to Melaka city through station, you need to take the taxi. Train services are slower and more expensive.

By Bus

In Malaysia there are a lot of buses that have various destinations and that are frequent. Most long-distance buses are cosy and all of them are air-conditioned. Melaka Central bus terminal is the hub for long-distance and local buses. It is about 4.5 km from Red Square.

By Ferry

On the north bank of the river is "The Eye on Malaysia" (a large Ferris wheel) which is a good landfall mark when making for Melaka.

Melaka ferry jetty, named Harbour Master is situated at Taman Melaka Raya near the Maritime Museum. For visitors from Sumatra, Indonesia, getting to Melaka by ferry is the most viable option. Daily ferries are available between Melaka and 3 locations in Sumatra; namely, Bengkalis, Dumai and Pekanbaru.

An unusual transport within Melaka is a trishaw. It is a small vehicle with a pedal and three wheels. You can find them at the Dutch Square. This non-polluting vehicle driver and at the same time guide, will acquaint you with every touristic point in the city.

Visa Information

All visitors to Melaka must hold a valid passport that is valid for atleast six months on arrival.

Nationals of EU countries, US, Canada, Australia, New Zeeland, Brazil, South Africa and Japan are not required to obtain visas in advance and will be given a social visit pass upon arrival that allows them to stay in Melaka for a period of up to 91 days.

Citizens of ASEAN (Association of South East Asian nations) countries and Hong Kong are not required to obtain visas in advance and will be given a social visit pass upon arrival that allows them to stay in Melaka for a period of up to 30 days.
